The Pennsylvania Historical Association is published in cooperation with local and regional historical societies and seeks to advance the study of  Pennsylvania heritage. At the time of publication the statewide association was  active in the Commonwealth.  Its annual meetings were held successively in different parts of the state, along with this quarterly journal and a series of pamphlets plus its co-sponsorship of an annual re-search conference in Pennsylvania history. The Institute of Pennsylvania Life and Cultures Association endeavors to stimulate scholarly activity and arouse popular interest in the sate's history.
